Funanori is a new project from Kaori505 Tsuchida (multi instrumentalist from The Go! Team) and Mike Watt (bass player from Minutemen, fIREHOSE, Iggy & The Stooges).

This collaboration is based around the sanshin, a traditional Okinawan three-stringed instrument, often likened to a banjo. Its haunting tone pervades the three tracks on Funanori’s debut release where funk rhythms and Beefheart-esque complexity collide. Featuring guest appearances from drummer Stephen Perkins of Jane’s Addiction and Porno For Pyros and saxophonist Chris Watling of The Grandsons.

From Watt:

I don’t speak for the band but I can tell a little something of what I know.

…we had a plan but no real idea how this would turn out. the plan was for each of us to record on our own from our own town, an overseas connection. I learned/am learning much, I’m new to her (Kaori’s) music but I really dig it…

…it is very happening for me to be a part of this band.
